Diversity and stability of fishes (Teleostei) in a temporary river of the Brazilian semiarid region

Abstract: The effects of hydrological disturbances by flooding and drought on the diversity and stability in a temporary river fish community in the Brazilian semiarid region were analyzed over the 1996 hydrological cycle. Twelve collections of fishes were made during the wet and dry phases, and 789 individuals of 16 species were collected. Diversity was measured using Simpson's Index (S) and community stability was analyzed by the variation in abundance using Kendall's W concordance test. Fish diversity in the Taperoá … Show more

“…The relative contribution of each species to the total amount of fish collected (expressed in percentage) and their frequencies of occurrence in the samples were estimated. The relative contribution of each species was used as a measure of dominance (Medeiros & Maltchik, 2001). The frequency of occurrence (as percentage) of each species at each sampling site was computed by dividing the number of samples in which the species was present by the total samples and multiplying by 100.…”

“…Furthermore, during this phase, the water retention in semipermanent and temporary pools represents refugia for the maintenance of aquatic species [9]. These small patchy ecosystems have been argued to contribute disproportionately to the regional assemblage of species given their high local diversity [10,11].…”

“…The severe hydrological fluctuation induced by the intervening flood dynamics are one of the most important factors affecting the stability of communities (Medeiros & Maltchik, 2001). In spite of this, fish assemblages tend to have certain resilience and re-establish themselves in the long term.…”

“…Nevertheless, the persistence or existence of fish assemblages in any habitat also depends upon other biotic (competition, depredation, nutritional, morphologic and physiological aspects) and abiotic factors (physicalchemical parameters of the water, food availability and refuge). Also, Medeiros & Maltchik (2001) and Thomaz et al (2007) suggested that spatial heterogeneity is important to the maintenance of stability and diversity in communities subjected to disturbances.…”
