Objective: to determine the factors associated with nicotine dependence in relation to cardiovascular morbidities and sleep behavior. Method: this is a quantitative, case-control, observational study with a sample of 323 smokers (case) and 322 non-smokers (control). A semi-structured questionnaire was applied with sociodemographic data and Fagerström Test For Nicotine Dependence (FTND). Results: lower schooling and income were presented by the case group when compared to the control group. In the multiple analysis, the study group was positively associated with the variables ≤8 years of study, had no religion, no diagnosis of ischemic heart disease, difficulties to sleep through snoring or cough more than twice a week, and did not fall asleep in 30 minutes also more than twice in the week. The case-group was negatively associated with skin color / white race and body mass index ≥30. Conclusion: it was concluded that individuals with nicotinic dependence had a greater chance of ischemic heart disease and disturbances in sleep behavior in the studied population. The importance of greater attention to risk factors related to nicotinic dependence, which potentiate chronic health problems and should be considered in the promotion and prevention of such damages, is reinforced. Método: trata-se de um estudo quantitativo, caso-controle, observacional com amostra de 323 indivíduos fumantes (caso) e 322 não fumantes (controle). Aplicou-se questionário semiestruturado com dados sociodemográficos e Fagerström Test For Nicotine Dependence (FTND). Resultados: apresentaram-se menores escolaridade e renda pelo grupo-caso quando comparado ao controle. Associou-se positivamente, na análise múltipla, o grupo-caso com as variáveis ≤8 anos de estudo, não possuir religião, diagnóstico de doença isquêmica do coração, dificuldades para dormir por ronco ou tosse mais que duas vezes na semana e não adormecer em 30 minutos também mais que duas vezes na semana. Associou-se negativamente o grupo-caso com a cor de pele/raça branca e o índice de massa corporal ≥30. Conclusão: conclui-se que indivíduos com dependência nicotínica apresentaram maior chance de doença isquêmica do coração e distúrbios no comportamento do sono na população estudada. Reforça-se a importância de maior atenção aos fatores de risco relacionados à dependência da nicotínica, que potencializam agravos crônicos à saúde e devem ser considerados na promoção e na prevenção de tais danos. Se asoció negativamente el grupo-caso con el color de piel / raza blanca y el índice de masa corporal ≥30. Conclusión: se concluye que individuos con dependencia nicotínica presentaron mayor probabilidad de enfermedad isquémica del corazón y disturbios en el comportamiento del sueño en la población estudiada. Se refuerza la importancia de mayor atención a los factores de riesgo relacionados con la dependencia de la nicotina, que potencian agravios crónicos a la salud y deben ser considerados en la promoción y la prevención de tales daños. BackgroundSmoking consumption alters cardiac autonomic function.ObjectiveAssess the influence of the intensity of smoking and the nicotine dependence degree in cardiac autonomic modulation evaluated through index of heart rate variability (HRV).Methods83 smokers, of both genders, between 50 and 70 years of age and with normal lung function were divided according to the intensity of smoking consumption (moderate and severe) and the nicotine dependency degree (mild, moderate and severe). The indexes of HRV were analyzed in rest condition, in linear methods in the time domain (TD), the frequency domain (FD) and through the Poincaré plot. For the comparison of smoking consumption, unpaired t test or Mann-Whitney was employed. For the analysis between the nicotine dependency degrees, we used the One-way ANOVA test, followed by Tukey's post test or Kruskal-Wallis followed by Dunn's test. The significance level was p < 0,05.ResultsDifferences were only found when compared to the different intensities of smoking consumption in the indexes in the FD. LFun (62.89 ± 15.24 vs 75.45 ± 10.28), which corresponds to low frequency spectrum component in normalized units; HFun (37.11 ± 15.24 vs 24.55 ± 10.28), which corresponds to high frequency spectrum component in normalized units and in the LF/HF ratio (2.21 ± 1.47 vs 4.07 ± 2.94). However, in the evaluation of nicotine dependency, significant differences were not observed (p > 0.05).ConclusionOnly the intensity of smoking consumption had an influence over the cardiac autonomic modulation of the assessed tobacco smokers. Tobacco smokers with severe intensity of smoking consumption presented a lower autonomic modulation than those with moderate intensity.
