Abstract: Background: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in Brazil, especially among the elderly. In the city of Rio de Janeiro (RJC), ischemic heart disease (IHD) is the predominant cause of mortality. Studies show an association between the process of urbanization, socioeconomic conditions and changes in lifestyle with the occurrence of IHD.

“…The redistribution coefficient is calculated based on the distribution of underlying causes of death by sex and age group, considering all defined causes 11 , 12 , 14 , 19 or only non-external causes 16 18 On the other hand, redistribution based on empirical studies is less used in Brazil, having been reported for specific causes such as cancer as well as maternal and external causes 4 …”

“…Statistical methods for this correction are used based on the behavior of the defined causes that were reported 13 . More common is the use of proportional redistribution according to the defined causes, registered by sex and age, considering all causes 11 , 12 , 14 , 19 or only the non-external causes, as proposed in the 1990 Global Burden of Disease Study 16 18 , e However, these redistribution methodologies are not considered satisfactory 10 .…”

“…Also, an urban effect associated to IHD mortality has been proposed in several countries. For example, in Perisse et al 14 and in McNutt et al ,15 the suggested explanations for that phenomenon are lifestyle, socio-economic differences, eating habits and professional stress. A Norwegian study by Nafstad et al 16 showed that urban air pollution might increase the risk of men dying, due to respiratory diseases, cancer or from IHD with an adjusted risk factor of 1.08%.…”
