Abstract: SummaryBackground: The clustering of cardiovascular risk factors called metabolic syndrome occurs in both children and adults. Insulin resistance and obesity are usual parts of the picture, but their joint effects on the onset of the syndrome remains somewhat debatable.

“…Studies sought to determine the features associated with MS in different age groups. In the present study, there was a higher correlation coefficient between the number of factors for MS and BMI, when compared to other measures of body composition ( 8 ) . The presence of risk factors for MS seems to be more frequent in obese children compared to those with normal weight or overweight, demonstrating that increased values of BMI increase the occurrence of other risk factors for MS ( 2 , 8 ) .…”

“…Indicators of body composition are strongly associated with metabolic changes, and it is important to verify their relationship with components of metabolic syndrome ( 7 , 8 ) and with insulin resistance ( 2 , 9 , 10 ) .…”

“…Some studies point to the hypothesis that the negative impact of increased amount of adipose tissue in the body on insulin sensitivity can be clearly demonstrated in most individuals, as well as increased insulin sensitivity observed with body weight reduction and physical exercise 40 .…”

“…Despite the lack of a unanimous hypothesis about the pathophysiological pathways that lead to the emergence of metabolic syndrome, it is suggested that plasma insulin levels, as well as the simple evaluation of BMI, are valuable indicators of clinical disorders compatible with MS in children 40 .…”
