Prevalência e fatores de risco associados à doença arterial periférica no projeto corações do Brasil

Abstract: PAD prevalence was markedly high, considering the low mean age of the studied population (44+/-14.7 yrs). IC was detected in a minority of PAD subjects, indicating a considerable number of asymptomatic individuals. Diabetes, obesity, stroke and IHD were the stronger predictors of PAD. The authors concluded that ABI measurement should be considered in the evaluation of moderate to high cardiovascular risk patients.

“…Additionally, CLI is associated with poor quality of life12 and high treatment costs,13 especially when amputation is inevitable 13, 14. With an estimated yearly incidence of 500 to 1000 new cases per million individuals in Western society,7 which is ever increasing in concert with the increase in cardiovascular risk factors,15, 16, 17 CLI poses a substantial burden on patients, healthcare providers, and resources.…”

“…In Brazil, the prevalence of PAD is 10.5% in the population over 18 years and, of these, 9% have symptoms of intermittent claudication (IC) (2) . PAD is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events, such as death, myocardial infarction, and stroke (3)(4)(5) .…”
