Abstract: SummaryObjective: To describe the prevalence of cardiac abnormalities in the echocardiogram of children with AIDS followed up in a reference service at 18± months of AIDS confirmed diagnosis. Methods: A cross-section study with a cohort after 18± months of AIDS diagnosis. “…Left ventricular systolic dysfunction was lower than what was reported in other studies among ART naïve children in Brazil (24.7% of 93 children) and earlier in Uganda (17% of 230 children) [7, 8]. ART reduces the viral load which in turn reduces myocardial invasion by cardiotropic viruses which would cause cardiac dysfunction [20].…”

“…The most common abnormalities found were left ventricular (LV) dilation and LV hypertrophy. 3 Cunha et al 4 found that LV dysfunction was common in Brazilian children approximately 18 months after acquired immune deficiency syndrome diagnosis. Their data suggest a much lower incidence of LV dysfunction in patients treated with ART.…”
