Alcohol and atherosclerosis

Abstract: Observational studies have attributed a protective effect to alcohol consumption on the development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Alcohol intake in the amount of one to two drinks per day results in an estimated 20-40% reduction in cardiovascular events. An additional protective effect, according to major cohort studies, has been attributed to wine, probably due to antioxidant effects and platelet antiaggregation agents. “…However, excessive alcohol use can raise the risk of atherosclerosis progression and be a role in conditions including high triglycerides, high blood pressure, weight gain, and irregular heartbeats. Due to the short epidemiological follow-up in this area, the association between alcohol use and cardiovascular illnesses, particularly their atherogenic and antiatherogenic qualities, is still up for debate.. 26,27,28 Hypertension:…”

“…Moderate and frequent alcohol consumption (>30 g/day) can bring benefits to the cardiovascular system (Foppa et al, 2001 ), with increased High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and the consumption of red wine has antioxidant action (da Luz and Coimbra, 2004 ). However, abusive alcohol consumption (>60 g/day) has direct consequences for the medium-long term health of the individual, such as liver disease, cancer, cardiovascular, and mental problems, as well as indirect consequences in case of accidents, suicides, and homicides due to short-term harm, such as cognitive and mobility problems (da Luz and Coimbra, 2004 ; Jennison, 2004 ; World Health Organization, 2019 ).…”
