Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is characterized by involuntary movements of the lower portion of the face being related to typical antipsychotic therapy. TD is associated with the oxidative imbalance in the basal ganglia. Lipoic acid (LA) and omega-3 (ω-3) are antioxidants acting as enzyme cofactors, regenerating antioxidant enzymes. This study aimed to investigate behavioral and neurochemical effects of supplementation with LA (100 mg/kg) and ω-3 (1 g/kg) in the treatment of TD induced by chronic use of haloperidol (HAL) (1 mg/kg) in rats. Wistar male rats were used, weighing between 180-200 g. The animals were treated chronically (31 days) with LA alone or associated with HAL or ω-3. Motor behavior was assessed by open-field test, the catalepsy test, and evaluation of orofacial dyskinesia. Oxidative stress was accessed by determination of lipid peroxidation and concentration of nitrite. LA and ω-3 alone or associated caused an improvement in motor performance by increasing locomotor activity in the open-field test and decreased the permanence time on the bar in the catalepsy test and decreased the orofacial dyskinesia. LA and ω-3 showed antioxidant effects, decreasing lipid peroxidation and nitrite levels. Thus, the use of LA associated with ω-3 reduced the extrapyramidal effects produced by chronic use of HAL.

Introduction: Schizophrenia is a complex clinical syndrome that may present with a great variety of psychopathologic manifestations, covering changes in thought, perception and emotions, as well as motricity and behavioral abnormalities. It symptoms can be divided in positive and negative. Many others psychiatric disturbances share schizophrenia symptoms, among then, Schizoaffective Disorder, with altered mood, as in depression or mania. Although there is, in literature, plenty of evidence about the impact of depressive symptoms in the quality of life in schizophrenic patients, we were unable to identify Brazilian prospects on the subject. Surpassing the findings of other studies, depression in schizophrenic patients has considerable impacts, in addition to its prevalence and frequent underdiagnosis. Objectives: Report a case of patient with Schizoafective Schizophrenia and Depression, treated in the Psycosocial Care Center (CAPES) III in the city of Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará, Brazil. Materials and Methods: Case study, with an descriptive transversal approach, realized under the rules of Resolution 466/12, from National Health Council /National Health Ministry regarding legal and ethical aspects about studies with human beings. The study was registered in the Plataform Brasil, and subsequently forwarded for consideration in the Research Ethics Committee, then being approved.

This study is an integrative literature review about complementary therapies and other strategies to treat schizophrenia. The search was carried out in the Virtual Health Library, CAPES, PUBMED and Cocrhane databases, with the descriptor “complementary medicine for schizophrenia”. We considered in this review publications between 2015 and 2020, written in Portuguese, English or Spanish. After applying all inclusion and exclusion criteria, 39 (thirty-nine) publications were selected. Among the analyzed strategies, the practice of Yoga presented more publications. We noted that complementary therapies related to schizophrenia are still under study, to prove how they improve schizophrenia symptoms. Therefore, the advancement and development of such practices, can assist in pharmacological treatment as allies in facing the difficulties related to schizophrenia.
