Objective: To understand the reasons why the adolescent hemophiliac does not adhere to hemophilia treatment. Methods: A qualitative study, conducted with seven adolescents, whose data were collected through semistructured interviews, using symbolic interactionism as the theoretical reference and interpretive interactionism as the methodology. Results: Adolescents can not meet the demands and diffi culties of the recommended treatment alone, they do not assume responsibilities inherent in this, and at the same time, judge what is appropriate treatment, while not valuing as essential the preventive aspects and feeling disbelief of its effectiveness against complications, as well as being dissatisfi ed with the care received in the service. Conclusions: The results reinforced the importance of family support to guarantee continuity of treatment for the adolescent hemophiliac and to provide additional subsidies to rethink care provided to them in specialized services, in order to facilitate the delivery of assistance geared to the demands of this population. RESUMOObjetivo: Compreender as razões pelas quais o adolescente hemofílico não adere ao tratamento de hemofi lia. Métodos: Estudo qualitativo, realizado com sete adolescentes, cujos dados foram coletados por entrevistas semiestruturadas, sendo o Interacionismo Simbólico o referencial teórico e o Interacionismo Interpretativo, o metodológico. Resultados: os adolescentes não conseguem enfrentar sozinhos as demandas e difi culdades do tratamento preconizado, por não assumirem as responsabilidades inerentes ao mesmo, além de julgarem que fazem o tratamento adequado, mesmo não valorizando os aspectos preventivos essenciais e perceberem-se descrentes de sua efetividade contra as complicações além de insatisfeitos com o atendimento recebido no serviço. Conclusões: os resultados reforçaram a importância de apoio da família para garantir a continuidade do tratamento ao adolescente hemofílico e oferecem subsídios para repensar a assistência prestada a eles nos serviços especializados, no sentido de favorecer a condução de um atendimento voltado às demandas dessa população. United States. Therapeutic advancements for haemophilia from cryoprecipitate to gene therapy have dramatically altered the natural course of disease. Today, people with haemophilia (PWH) are expected to have a normal life expectancy. Despite this, quality of life for PWH remains compromised beyond the physical sequelae of their illness. People with haemophilia face unique challenges from a young age, and these affect nearly every aspect of life including relationships with family and peers, emotional well-being, and behaviour.Abstract Aim: Despite significant advances in morbidity and mortality outcomes, quality of life for people with haemophilia (PWH) remains compromised. Underrecognized and undertreated mental health disorders decrease quality of life; however, reports are inconsistent regarding the true prevalence of mental health disorders in PWH. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search of Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, Psychinfo and the Cochrane Library, and hand searched the journal Haemophilia to identify records and subsequently conducted a meta-analysis to determine the prevalence of depression, anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in patients with congenital haemophilia.Results: Our search strategy identified 2315 records, and 28 studies met eligibility criteria. Meta-analysis demonstrated that PWH are at increased risk of depression (odds ratio (OR) 2.45; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.64-3.68), anxiety (OR 1.74, 95% CI 1.01-3.00), anxiety/depression (OR 2.60, 95% CI 2.35-2.87) and ADHD (OR 3.48, 95% CI 1.74-6.96). We found considerable heterogeneity among the studies likely due to differences in assessment tools, populations studied and year of publication.This suggests that standardized tools to diagnose mental health disorders in PWH are needed. Additionally, high-quality studies investigating mental health disorders in PWH are necessary to adequately document the prevalence of these disorders. Conclusion:Overall, our meta-analysis suggests that the prevalence of depression, anxiety and ADHD across decades is significantly increased in PWH compared to the general population.

Objective. The objective of this study was to identify correlations between depression symptoms and cortical functions in children with learning difficulties. Method. A sample of 33 students participated in the study, 25 males and 8 females, with average age of 10.7 years old, recruted from outpatients clinics of Neurology, specialized in learning problems with multidisciplinary evaluation. The participants were evaluated with the following instruments: the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) and Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI). For data analysis, the Statistical Package for Social Sciences was used for descriptive and inferential statistics. Results. Three students presented depression symptoms. Negative correlations (the more depressive were the children the less scored in WISC) were found between CDI and the WISC verbal subtests: Similarities, Vocabulary, and Comprehension; between the CDI and the WISC Verbal Intelligence Quotient (IQ), Total IQ, and Verbal Comprehension Index; between the CDI and the WISC test of sustained visual attention: Symbol Search and Speed of Processing Index. Conclusions. We observed that the depression symptoms interfered negatively in verbal functions and sustained visual attention. The study demonstrates that it is important to investigate depressive symptoms in children, mainly in those who present learning difficulties.
