Flood pulse and spatial dynamics of mercury in sediments in Puruzinho lake, Brazilian Amazon

Abstract: The study was conducted in Puruzinho lake (Humaitá, AM) considering seasonal periods of rainy and dry in way to elucidate the flood pulse importance in the deposition, remobilization and distributions of mercury and organic matter in bottom sediments in the Madeira River Basin (Brazilian Amazon). Bottom sediments and soils samples were analyzed for total mercury and organic matter. Mercury concentrations obtained in bottom sediment were 32.20-146.40 ng g -1 and organic matter values were 3.5 -18.0%. The main r… Show more

“…Atmospheric deposition maybe an additional source of Hg to the floodplain lakes. A study conducted in sediments from Puruzinho Lake (Madeira River Basin) during wet seasonal period observed THg concentrations ranging from 44 ng g −1 to 129 ng g −1 (Almeida et al ). The authors concluded that the distribution of Hg is mainly controlled by an import of Madeira river water during flooding, while the predominant process in the dry season was the remobilization of THg due to the resuspension of bottom sediments (Almeida et al ).…”

“…They are also a scenario for complex relationships of animals, plants and the environment (Isaac, Fabre, Silva, Ruffino & Saint-Paul, 2012). Effects of these environmental changes include the alteration of habitats, shifts in nutrient cycling patterns, and changes in temperature, oxygen levels, and other limnological variables (Kreibich, 2002;Esteves, 2011a;Almeida et al, 2014;Brito, Alves & Espirito-Santo, 2014). Under the influence of the environmental variation, many organisms, namely ichthyofauna, suffer direct effects of changes in community composition and food availability (Poff et al, 1997;Winemiller & Jepsen, 1998;Saint-Paul et al, 2000;Santos, Ferreira & Amadio, 2008).…”

“…Contributing to standardize in the hydrological periods delimitation, this study expands the procedure described by Bittencourt & Amadio (2007) and demonstrate how a simple data collection can provide reliable models (see Equations 1 and 2) to identify the seasonal changes in a lake without any hydrometric history (see Tables 3, 4 and 5). We believe this approach can be especially useful for floodplain studies, due the flood pulse social and ecological importance (Poff et al, 1997;Bayley, 1995;Johnson, Richardson & Naimo, 1995;Junk & Wantzen, 2004;Alho, 2008;Lopes & Caliman, 2008;Almeida et al, 2014;Soares, Freitas & Oliveira, 2014) combined with the lack of permanent hydrometric monitoring programs in most of these environments (Ramalho et al, 2005).…”

“…Nevertheless, studies involving Hg are scarce, especially because of the complex technical requirements of exclusive extraction and the high costs of analyses (Franklin et al, 2012). Some of the noteworthy studies are: Siqueira & Aprile (2012); Hortellani et al, (2013); Almeida et al, (2014); Araujo et al (2015); Remor et al (2015); Rocha et al, (2015); and Sahoo et al (2015).…”
