As coletas fora… Show more

“…Due to the sampling period, form of butterfly sampling and the type of vegetation in the studied area, we did not record Hedylidae in Bosque da Ciência. Hedylidae butterflies have nocturnal habits, usually collected by light traps and are sensitive to landscape change, especially those of anthropic characters (louRido et al 2008). This is the first survey for this area, therefore, all species represent new records for Bosque da Ciência.…”

“…The collection of a relatively larger quantity of sphingids from rainforest canopy, in relation to sampling at ground level, is an indication that the species fly over the treetops, possibly for dispersal, foraging, and seeking the opposite sex for mating (also observed in Hedylidae by Lourido et al 2008). The environment of the canopy allows for the attraction of large numbers of species because light can propagate over a long distance without the common obstacles encountered in pathways and clearings at ground level.…”

“…In the Amazon rainforest, nocturnal sampling in towers to reach the canopy has enabled the survey and the discovery of new species in other insect groups, including Cerambycidae (Coleoptera) (Martins et al 2006), Mantispidae (Neuroptera) (Machado 2007;Machado and Rafael 2007), praying mantises (Mantodea) (Dantas et al 2008), Hedylidae (Lepidoptera) (Lourido et al 2008) and Tabanidae (Diptera) (Krolow et al 2010). These studies have shown that many species rarely sampled in lower forest strata are actually quite abundant in the canopy and many others that occur predominantly in the canopy.…”
