Show more

“…The first is that MN formation occurred in a shorter exposure period, and the micronucleated cells were eliminated before detection on prolonged periods. This theory is supported by Bücker et al (2006) that verify the induction of new micronuclei at 48 h in fish exposed to benzene, with successive reduction in the frequency after 96 h and 15 days. Another hypothesis would be related to the interference of xenobiotics in the organism, promoting a decrease in erythropoiesis and, consequently, reducing the production of erythrocytes, both normal and micronucleated (Udroiu 2006).…”

“…Chromosomal abnormalities and significant increases in micronuclei in blood cells have been associated with exposure to genotoxic agents. [24][25][26] The micronucleus test (MN) [27][28][29] has been recommended for environmental biomonitoring studies, 17,30,31 mainly due to its capacity to qualitatively assess the effects of clastogenic and aneugenic agents. 16,[32][33][34][35] Fish have received special attention because they are efficient bioindicators of environmental quality and are capable of metabolizing xenobiotics and pollutants accumulated in the aquatic environment.…”
