The Araguaia River Basin covers a considerable extent of Brazilian Savanna (locally called Cerrado) and part of Amazon Tropical Rainforest, embracing high biodiversity and a vast flooding area. This region has been converted to agricultural lands since 1970s, for the past four decades, leading to a fragmented landscape that holds one of the few large remaining blocks of Cerrado primary vegetation. Therefore, to assess the degree of preservation of this area a 2007 primary vegetation map was derived through Boolean operations using land use and land cover maps from 1975, 1985, 1996 and 2007, from digital classification of Landsat MSS and TM images. To evaluate the role of driving factors on the presence of pristine vegetation, a logistic regression analyses was performed. Tested factors were: distance from roads and cities, terrain slope, land tenure, soil fertility and flooding. We found statistical significant values (p < .05) showing that distance from roads and cities, the increase in slope, the presence of protected areas, indigenous lands, wetlands and areas with low fertility have positive influence on the presence and maintenance of these pristine areas. The occurrence of original vegetation in many cases is associated with environmental constraints that difficult or do not allow agricultural use. Analysis of physical and political factors, which may have direct or indirect influence on the conservation and degradation of native vegetation are very important for the comprehension of the dynamics of regional land use, and provide supporting information for a more efficient and sustainable regional landscape planning.

Land-cover classification with remotely sensed data in moist tropical regions is a challenge due to the complex biophysical conditions. This paper explores techniques to improve land-cover classification accuracy through a comparative analysis of different combinations of spectral signatures and textures from Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM + ) and Radarsat data. A wavelet-merging technique was used to integrate Landsat ETM + multispectral and panchromatic data or Radarsat data. Grey-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) textures based on Landsat ETM + panchromatic or Radarsat data and different sizes of moving windows were examined. A maximum-likelihood classifier was used to implement image classification for different combinations. This research indicates the important role of textures in improving land-cover classification accuracies in Amazonian environments. The incorporation of data fusion and textures increases classification accuracy by approximately 5.8-6.9% compared to Landsat ETM + data, but data fusion of Landsat ETM + multispectral and panchromatic data or Radarsat data cannot effectively improve land-cover classification accuracies.

Abordagem morfopedológica na avaliação da suscetibilidade à erosão dos solos em Vale de São Domingos (MT)Os processos erosivos são responsáveis pelo carreamento das partículas do solo, provocando o assoreamento de rios e nascentes. Objetivou-se avaliar a suscetibilidade à erosão dos solos e os conflitos de uso no município de Vale de São Domingos/MT, considerando que este vem apresentando nas últimas décadas crescimento populacional, o que implica em novas formas de utilização do espaço geográfico. Os procedimentos metodológicos adotados foram: compartimentação morfopedológica, realizada por meio da associação dos mapas municipais de pedologia e geomorfologia; geração do mapa de susceptibilidade à erosão, por meio da sobreposição dos mapas de grau de erodibilidade e declividade; susceptibilidade à erosão; geração dos mapas de cobertura vegetal e uso da terra; potencial à erosão, capacidade de uso das terras e conflito de uso do solo. No município de Vale de São Domingos foi identificada a predominância de Neossolos Quartzarênicos em 59,11% da área do município, em relevo suave ondulado. Houve a predominância da classe extremamente suscetível à erosão e foram identificadas no município a presença de áreas com alto potencial à erosão hídrica. Conforme a avaliação da capacidade de uso das terras foi possível definir que classe a VII de capacidade de uso das terras é mais adequada em 59,34% da área da municipalidade. A classe de alto conflito de uso dos solos foi a predominante, demonstrando que as atividades antrópicas estão afetando a qualidade do solo, bem como afetando os recursos naturais da área de estudo. Constatou-se a, demanda de práticas conservacionistas dos usos desses solos, devido a predominância de solos frágeis na área de estudo. The objective of this study was to evaluate the susceptibility to soil erosion and land use conflicts in the municipality of Vale São Domingos/Mato Grosso State, considering that it presented a strong population growth in the last decades, which implies on new ways to use the geographic space. The methodological procedures adopted were: morpho-pedological mapping, carried out in association with the municipal soils and geomorphology maps; generation of a map on erosion susceptibility, overlapping of maps on the degree of erosion and slope; susceptibility to erosion; execution of land cover and land use maps as well as maps on erosion potential, land use capacity and land use conflicts.
