Pirarucu, Arapaima gigas, is a carnivorous freshwater fish that exists along the Amazon Basin. This study investigated the effect of stocking density on growth performance and economic return of pirarucu in cages. Fish were stocked at densities of 10 or 12.5 fish/m 3 in 4.0-m 3 cages installed in Sítios Novos Reservoir (Ceará State, Brazil), with three replicate cages for each density. Fish were fed a formulated diet containing 40% crude protein and 14.2 MJ/kg of feed and cultured for 140 days. The following physicochemical parameters of the water were always at satisfactory levels for fish culture throughout the experiments: water temperatures ranged from 26.3 to 30.2°C, DO 3.2 to 7.7 mg/L, pH 6.9 to 7.7 and transparency 100 to 130 cm. Survival was high and ranged between 100.0% and 94.7 ± 5.0% in cages at 10 and 12.5 fish/m 3 , respectively. Density significantly affected (P b 0.05) final mean weight (2630.4 ± 213.7 and 2138.0 ± 148.2 g) and weight gain (2516.9±202.0 and 2043.1±142.9 g). In contrast, specific growth rate (2.25±0.09 and 2.22±0.06%/day), feed conversion ratio (1.2±0.1 and 1.2±0.2) and production (26.3±2.1 and 25.4±2.6 kg/m 3 ) were not significantly (P>0.05) affected by stocking density. Economic analysis was emphasized mostly on sales price and pirarucu juveniles and feed costs. The total costs of production were estimated at US$4.52/kg and US$5.31/kg for stocking densities of 10 fish/m 3 and 12.5 fish/m 3 , respectively. At a local market price of US$5.55/kg, the model used suggests that a commercial enterprise can be profitable only for density of 10 fish/m 3 . Furthermore, the economic viability of implementing of pirarucu culture in cages was analyzed using profitability indicators such as internal rate of return (IRR), net present value (NPV) and payback period. The high survival, very fast growth and moderated production rates of pirarucu stocked demonstrate that cages are a viable alternative method to standard ponds for the commercial production of pirarucu. The economic indicators appear to be attractive, thus pirarucu cage culture can become a profitable industry.

First record of Trichodina heterodentata (Ciliophora: Trichodinidae) from Arapaima gigas cultivated in Peru

This study characterized morphologically Trichodina heterodentata Duncan, 1977 from cultivated fingerlings of "pirarucu" Arapaima gigas in Peru. Body and gill smears were air-dried at room temperature, impregnated with silver nitrate and/or stained with gomori trichromic. Prevalence was 100%. Trichodina heterodentata was considered a medium-sized trichodinid with mean body diameter of 56.0+ 5.25 (47.3-76.0) µm, denticulate ring 28.21± 2.71 (20-34.7) µm, adhesive disc 45.7±3.8 (37.1-57.3) µm diameter and number of denticles of 20.7± 2.6 (12-24). The present study reports not only the first occurrence of T. heterodentata in Peru but also the first record of this trichodinid infesting A. gigas. Camparative tables of all reports of T. heterodentata are also presented.

Pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) is an obligatory air-breathing fish from the Amazon basin. Previous study showed that pirarucu juveniles present a latency period in their response to moderate stress (transportation). Therefore the objective of this study was to verify the effects of a prolonged air exposure stress in lactate, glucose, cortisol, haematocrit, haemoglobin, and liver glycogen in pirarucu. Thirty-six fish were handled by netting and subjected to air exposure for 75-min. Six fish were sampled before handling and at 0, 6, 24, 48, and 96h after handling. Fish cortisol, lactate and haematocrit rose after handling, returning to previous unstressed values on the following sampling (6h after handling). Glucose increased significantly after handling and that was maintained for 24 h. There were no changes in haemoglobin and liver glycogen as a consequence of handling. The results demonstrate a quick response when exposed to an acute stressor and a fast recovery, suggesting that pirarucu does not use their glycogen reserves during an acute stress. The results suggest that pirarucu exhibit physiological stress responses to handling similar in magnitude to those previously documented for many teleostean fishes, including salmonids.KEYWORDS: Pirarucu, Stress, Air exposure, Glycogen, Cortisol, Glucose, Lactate, Haematocrit. Resposta fisiológica de estresse em pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) submetido ao manuseio RESUMOO pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) é um peixe de respiração aérea obrigatória da bacia Amazônica. Estudo prévio demonstrou que juvenis de pirarucu apresentam um período de latência em sua resposta de estresse a um estresse moderado (transporte). Desta forma, o objetivo deste estudo foi verificar os efeitos de uma exposição aérea prolongada no lactato, glicose, cortisol, hematócrito, hemoglobina e glicogênio do fígado em pirarucu. Trinta e seis peixes foram manuseados com um puçá e expostos ao ar por 75-min. Seis peixes foram amostrados antes do manuseio e 0, 6, 24, 48, e 96h após o manuseio. O cortisol, lactato e hematócrito aumentaram após o manuseio, retornando para valores semelhantes ao de antes do manuseio na amostragem seguinte (6 h após o manuseio). A glicose aumentou significativamente após o manuseio e o aumento se manteve até a amostragem de 24h. Não houve mudança significativa na hemoglobina e no glicogênio como conseqüência do manuseio. Os resultados demonstram que o pirarucu apresenta uma rápida resposta e uma rápida recuperação quando exposto a um estressor agudo e sugerem que o pirarucu não usa suas reservas de glicogênio nesta situação. Os resultados indicam que o pirarucu apresenta uma resposta fisiológica de estresse similar em magnitude com muitos outros teleósteos, incluindo os salmonídeos.
