Prevalence of Chagas disease in blood donors at the Uberaba Regional Blood Center, Brazil, from 1995 to 2009

Abstract: Introduction: A retrospective study was conducted to assess the occurrence of blood donations that were ineligible due to Chagas disease infection from 1995 to 2009 at the Uberaba Regional Blood Center (HRU), Brazil, verify the tendency of this ineligibility, and describe the epidemiologic profile of the donors. Methods: Retrospective studies of serological ineligibility due to Chagas disease, statistical analysis by means of the chi-square test and odds ratio, study of the tendencies using a dispersion graph… Show more

“…The obtained prevalence was similar to the seroprevalence registered in the city of Uberaba (0.2% serology without confirmation) [9]; however, it was higher compared to the cities of São Paulo (0.02% per year; study period 1996-2001) [10] and Campinas (0.05%) [11]. The last two cities, which are located within São Paulo State, represent the largest metropolitan territories not only in the State but also in the country; therefore, the anti-T. cruzi Ab seroprevalence is calculated on large sample volume with a smaller number of confirmed cases.…”

“…It is well known that significant decreases in T. cruzi seroprevalence and mortality due to Chagas disease resulted from the implementation of vector control programs in the Southern Cone region [27][28][29][30]. Similarly, the operation of a strong national malaria control program in El Salvador since the 1970s, which has resulted in a decrease in the number of malaria cases (last recorded as 15 per year in 2011) [31], might have contributed to a reduction in R. prolixus infection as a secondary positive effect.…”
