“…The data show an association of coinfection with early mortality, compared to deaths from Chagas disease only, as described in a previous study [10]. The magnitude of both AIDS and Chagas disease in Brazil as chronic conditions will probably increase the likelihood of occurrence of coinfection in the future [12]. …”

“…This indicates that Chagas reactivation in the central nervous system and myocardium is usually severe, often with fatal results [7]. Reactivation is suspected when the coinfected subject presents clinically acute Chagas disease or clinical decompensation of the chronic phase, organic impairment uncommon in Chagas disease, or pseudotumoral brain lesions [5, 7, 12]. In the case of absent or controlled reactivation, survival is directly related to the complications of Chagas disease and of HIV/AIDS infection.…”

“…Brazil, a country with a high prevalence of leishmaniasis, led scientific production on leishmaniasis in Latin America. This can be attributed to the number of researchers and development of the country’s scientific system, which has become the principal scientific reference for South America [20,29]. India, a country with a high prevalence of leishmaniasis, mainly in the state of Bihar [1,2,25,30], was the third country, and it led scientific production on leishmaniasis in Asia.…”

“…For this reason, a good reference is the afore-mentioned "Rede brasileira de atenção e estudos em co-infecção Trypanosoma cruzi/HIV (e outras condições de imunossupressão)", founded in 2006 in order to coordinate and organize the Brazilian healthcare network and to integrate established international groups into it. These efforts serve to promote synergies that contribute to an international network that improves care and strengthens the development of strategic studies in the area (ALMEIDA et al 2009;RAMOS JUNIOR et al 2010). In addition, it would be necessary to foster research in countries with high prevalence of the disease but where no notably productive authors have been identified, such as in Mexico, Bolivia, Guatemala, Ecuador, Honduras, El Salvador and Paraguay (RAMOS et al 2011).…”
