Show more

“…There was no association between L. infantum infection and the dog's sex, age, or degree of confinement, corroborating other studies 24,34,35,36,37 . The household's proximity to forest areas also failed to show an association with L. infantum infection.…”

“…The household's proximity to forest areas also failed to show an association with L. infantum infection. However, a study in Cuiabá, capital of Mato Grosso State, identified as the principal risk factors for canine infection the confinement in the peridomiciliary environment and households' proximity to forest and dense vegetation 36 . This fact may be associated with greater exposure to the vector, increasing the odds of canine infection in the area.…”

“…in 95 (22.1%) of dogs in Cuiabá, where CVL was recently installed. This rate of prevalence was higher than data reported in other studies accomplished in the same municipality FONTES, 2007;ALMEIDA et al, 2009), and the reason may be that there were human cases of the disease reported in the same neighborhood. According to Marzochi et al (2009) the canine disease tends to precede human cases, which are kept high in endemic areas.…”

“…The presence of about 22% of leishmaniasis seropositive dogs is an important datum for the epidemiological surveillance of Cuiabá. Studies conducted in this city have already demonstrated the expansion of the canine disease even to areas even where no human cases have been reported (ALMEIDA et al, 2009). Historically, VL originates from rural environments where epidemiological patterns facilitate the circulation of the agent.…”

“…When infected, dogs can exhibit a variety of moderate to severe clinical signs or can be asymptomatic, thus contributing as a principal source of infection in urban areas. In a recent seroepidemiological survey for leishmaniasis in dogs domiciled in the urban area of Cuiabá, prevalence of 3.4% positivity 12 was determined, with simultaneous cases of VL and tegumentary leishmaniasis registered in the municipal district 13 .…”
