Abstract: Out of a total of 1,238 cases of dermatophytosis in the city of Recife (Pernambuco), lesions of the scalp (33.7%) and Trichophyton tonsurans (25.5%) predominated between 1995 and 2000, while lesions of the hairless skin (35.5%) and Trichophyton rubrum (34%) were the most frequent between 2000 and 2005. A significant reduction in Trichophyton mentagrophytes was detected in the second of these periods.

“…It is more than a cosmetic problem, and diabetic patients have a greater risk of serious complications with the disease 55 . The predominance of women among individuals with superficial and cutaneous fungal infections has been reported by other authors 4,14,34,36,57 , who proposed the hypothesis that clinical manifestations of certain dermatomycoses (e.g. in nails) could be predominantly cosmetic and affect women more directly than men.…”

“…Regarding the anatomical site affected by dermatophytosis, 3.19% of preschoolers, aged between 6 months and 5 years, presented lesions in the hair scalp, which could be due to immune system deficiency against this type of infection, lower sebum production in the hair scalp and higher exposure to risk factors such as poor personal hygiene and agglomeration in education institutions. 1,13,[25][26][27][28][29] The absence of lesions in preschoolers' nails can be attributed to rapid nail growth, smaller surface area for invasion of infecting conidia and reduced probability of trauma. 30 In the case of cutaneous candidosis, children aged between 6 and 12 years were the most affected-5.37% and 3.71% of the cases corresponded to onychomycosis in the feet and skin lesions, respectively.…”
