Mycetoma fungal infection: multiple organisms as colonizers or pathogens?

Abstract: We describe a patient with mycetoma or Madura foot, in RESUMO Descrevemos um paciente com micetoma ou maduromicose de pé, no que colorações histopatológicos de osso e de culturas superficiais sugeriram três organismos diferentes, incluindo espécies de Nocardia como causador. Os critérios de diagnóstico dos organismos, a diferenciação entre colonizador e patógeno, e a significância das infecções mistas são discutidos.Palavras-chaves: Micetoma. Maduromicose de pé. Colonização.

“…The granules of actinomycetoma consists of fine branching filaments, only about 1um thick are gram positive, whereas the grains of eumycetoma are gram negative [10]. Eumycotic grains are composed of 4-5μm thick septate hyphae and are demonstrated by PAS (periodic acid-Schiff) and GMS (Gomori methenamine silver) stains [13].…”

“…Regarding the prevalence of subcutaneous mycoses, several cases of mycetoma due to Nocardia species, Acremonium sp and Madurella mycetomatis have been reported (27)(28)(29)(30). Bansal and Prabhakar (31) reported 31 histologically confirmed cases of chromoblastomycosis with positive cultures of Fonsecea pedrosoi in 16 of them.…”
