“…This species was the fifth most frequently found in captures across 12 Brazilian states in recent years [13, 105]. P. lutzi occurs in Caatinga and can be found inhabiting armadillo nests [113]; however, it has a much more eclectic diet in domestic environments and shows high levels of natural infection [45]. …”

“…The species P. lutzi and T. sordida , which have both been previously reported in the state of Piauí 9 , were also collected in the study area. Panstrongylus lutzi is frequently found in the northeastern region of Brazil 18 , 19 , 22 and presents greater importance as a T. cruzi vector because it can be found in the intradomicile and present high levels of natural infections 22 , 23 . In contrast, T. sordida is typical of the cerrado biome (central region of Brazil) and occurs in the northeast region mainly in areas bordering that biome with the caatinga 14 .…”

“…Panstrongylus lutzi is one of the native species of northeastern Brazil, and its geographical distribution coincides with the extension of the Caatinga biome. Mainly in Ceará and Pernambuco states, it is increasingly common the presence of adults in the intradomicile and generally presenting high rates of T. cruzi infection, elevating the epidemiological importance of this species [44]. Studies evaluating natural infections by T. cruzi in P. lutzi have been reported using parasitological search by microscopy; in one of these, T. cruzi flagellates were identified in 29.1% of the specimens found in the intradomicile, in 20 municipalities of Ceará [44].…”

As mentioned, the high positivity found in the present study for kDNA-PCR may have been overestimated due to the collection of a small number of P. lutzi specimens and the vast majority being infected.…”
