“…8 Thus, we suggest the routine examination of urinary sediment for immunosuppressed patients with fever, especially transplant and with AIDS. [19][20][21] Our study showed that cryptococcuria could occur not only in HIV-infected patients but also in patients with other immunocompromised conditions, such as transplant, and even in immunocompetent patients, as already reported in literature. 5 Cryptococcus identified in urine is suggested as a potential early indicator of disseminated disease.…”

“…However, the urine has been a very useful diagnostic, especially if processed with nigrosine dye for microscopy of urinary sediment (demonstration of the capsule) and grown in medium with niger seed (Staib agar – reveal the melanin) 8 . Thus, we suggest the routine examination of urinary sediment for immunosuppressed patients with fever, especially transplant and with AIDS 19–21 …”

“…Of the HIV-infected patients, 45.6% had 5 leukocytes/mm 3 or less, a finding that stresses the importance of surveying fungi even when cytological parameters are normal. Other investigators also report decreased inflammatory response in CSF in patients with AIDS 17 .…”
