Prevalence of intestinal nematodes in alcoholic patients

Abstract: We report the results of a retrospective study on the frequency of intestinal nematodes among 198 alcoholic and 440 nonalcoholic patients at the University Hospital Cassiano Antonio Moraes in Vitória, ES, Brazil. The control sample included 194 nonalcoholic patients matched according to age, sex and neighborhood and a random sample of 296 adults admitted at the same hospital. “…The results of this study are consistent with distribution of parasites found in HUPES. A possible explanation for the higher prevalence of S. stercoralis may be the presence of chronic alcoholism, which was not investigated in our study (11,14) . Rivasi et al (10) , in a study with nine duodenal biopsies, showed that the reactive pathological changes of duodenal mucosa, particularly the eosinophilic infiltrate of lamina propria, appear to be related to infection degree.…”
