Show more

“…Of note is the fact that this highly endemic pattern of HAV infection does not seem to have changed over the last few years. A recent seroprevalence study carried out in a small city in the state of Amazonas (Assis et al 2002) showed that HAV seroprevalence rates among children under 10 years of age are as high as those reported by Bensabath et al (1987) 15 years earlier. It is possible that the poor sanitary conditions seen in the state of Amazonas are responsible for maintaining the epidemiological pattern of HAV in stasis over the last decades.…”

“…In Brazil, studies on HEV were limited to prevalence of anti-HEV antibodies in general population or specific groups in the 90's, ranging from 0.7% to 11% (1,11,12,14,16,17). Data about the possibility of HEV circulation among animal species are still scarce in Brazil.…”

“…By contrast, studies performed in the Northern region showed a 86.4% seroprevalence of hepatitis A among children from two to nine years (n = 487) 3 , and 90.9% in riverine children from 0 to 10 years old (n = 22) 16 .…”
