Angiostrongilose abdominal: profilaxia pela destruição das larvas infectantes em alimentos tratados com sal, vinagre ou hipoclorito de sódio

Abstract: There is a high prevalence of accidental human infection with Angiostrongylus costaricensis in some areas in southern Brazil and sometimes it presents as severe intestinal disease. Prophylaxis is important since there is no medical treatment for the disease. The ingestion of fruits and vegetables contaminated with the mucous secretion of infected molluscs (the intermediate hosts) is one of the proposed modes of transmission. Third stage larvae were incubated at 5 degrees C for 12 hours, in solutions of saturat… Show more

“…In the present study, the other detergents and acetic acid also did not interfere in the mortality of A. lumbricoides larvae. However, in the studies of Zanini & Graeff-Teixeira (1995)31 that used the parasite A. costaricensis as a model, the effectiveness of sodium hypochlorite was observed, differently from what was observed in the present study, which did not observe efficacy in the mortality of A. lumbricoides larvae, corroborating with the studies byMassara et al (2003) …”

“…Human beings are accidental hosts and infection occurs after ingestion of mollusks, snails or contaminated vegetables containing the L3 larvae 19 , 22 . It has been informed that its frequency increases during rainy months because this facilitates the reproduction of the mollusks 29 .…”

“…In chronic cases, the patients may present low-grade fever and mild and occasional abdominal pain for several weeks 18 . When evolving to chronicity, the intestinal inflammatory reaction becomes a palpable mass in the right iliac fossa 24 . The clinical picture can be intermittent: the patient may present an alternation of remission periods followed by short symptomatic intervals; at this point, a sub-occlusive condition may occur.…”

“…Such modifications may generate imbalances in the mollusk populations that form the intermediate hosts and, as a consequence of this, generate higher levels of risk for human infection 11 . Preventive measures include careful food inspection and cleaning, especially prior to vegetable consumption 24 . Land snails such as Megalobulimus sp, should be adequately boiled before ingestion and their production must be undertaken in closed breeding settings so as to avoid any contact with feces and rodents; slug fishing baits must also be avoided 11 .…”
