Bacteriological evaluation of wounds in seriously burned hospitalized patients

Abstract: During the period between May and December 1988, 21 patients were studied bacteriologically at Hospital João XXIII's burn's unit which belongs to "Fundação Hospitalar do Estado de Minas Gerais" in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. A qualitative and quantitative evaluation of aerobic and facultative bacteria from burn wounds was carried out by the standard filter paper disc technique, including antibiotic susceptibility. “…35 There have been other reports of possible melioidosis from Brazil, including isolation of B. pseudomallei from burns patients, but these lacked detail on disease presentation, exposure, or corroborating evidence. 36 There have been reports of sporadic human melioidosis from other parts of Central America. [37][38][39][40] More recently, there have been occasional reports of melioidosis diagnosed unexpectedly after presumed exposure in parts of South or Central America not previously known to be endemic for the disease.…”

“…In one study, B. pseudomallei was recovered from environmental specimens (soap, floor, and shower hose) in a burn unit of a hospital in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. 27 A prior review of melioidosis cases in the Americas described 105 cases with an association (residence when diagnosed, travel history, or country of birth) to the Americas. 28 Two of the cases (one case reported from Oklahoma in 1976 and the other reported from Georgia in 1979) have since been reclassified as infections with the closely related bacteria Burkholderia oklahomensis.…”
