Show more

“…Besides, positive fluorescence was never observed in control sections or in cases of C. hepatica spurius infection (animals subjected to ingestion of non-infective immature eggs). Spurious infection has been claimed to sensitize the host on the basis of the ELISA test (Nascimento & Sadigursky 1986), a finding not confirmed in the present investigation, especially when the IIF was applied. Fluorescence was then weak and non-specific, disappearing when dilutions of 1:400 or over were employed.…”

“…During natural infection they are retained within the liver for prolonged periods of time, but once in the external environment, with appropriate conditions of moisture and temperature, they are able to mature and infect. In cases of so-called spurius infection , when immature eggs are ingested by a susceptible host, they pass unchanged through the gastrointestinal tract, but are able to immunologically sensitize the host 8 . Their chitinous shell is difficult to digest once inside the host tissues, so it may retard resorption of the lesions and act as adjuvant for host sensitization.…”

“…Although previously published studies show that the prevalence of C. hepatica in certain rodent species, tends to be high (between 56.5 and 89.3%) 5 , 7 , 20 , 31 , the prevalence of C. hepatica infection appears to be low among residents of the studied area and among rodents that live close to their dwellings.…”
