THE POWER OF THE SMALL: THE EXAMPLE OF Paracoccidioides brasiliensis CONIDIA

Abstract: SUMMARYResearch on Paracoccidioides brasiliensis has centered in the yeast cell probably because of the lack of distinctive features in the mycelium. In 1942 and for the first time, lateral conidia were noticed in the fungus' hyphae. Later on, Brazilian, Venezuelan and Argentinean researchers described "aleurias" when the fungus was grown in natural substrates. In 1970 authors became interested in the conidia and were able to obtain them in large numbers and treat them as individual units. Their shape and size… Show more

“…In dimorphic fungi, including P . brasiliensis , Hsps expression is increased during the conidia to yeast transition [ 28 , 29 ], an event that may be important in the fungal pathogenesis when conidia reach the lungs of hosts [ 30 ]. In the characterization studies of Hsp60 from P .…”

“…Neutrophils granules contain antimicrobial peptides, nucleolytic enzymes, and also oxygen metabolites acting in the removal process disrupting the cell membrane of fungus ( Traynor and Huffnagle, 2001 ; Rodrigues et al., 2007 ; González et al., 2008b ; Pathakumari et al., 2020 ). In addition, PMNs are able to produce extracellular traps (NETs), these structures are able to capture microbials, degrade their virulence factors, and eliminate the pathogens ( Mejía et al., 2015 ; Restrepo et al., 2015 ).…”
