“…According to notifiable infectious disease regulation, all varicella cases are reported to JNCDC through NNDRS using a standard pro forma that includes details of name, sex, age, address, and date of symptom onset. The diagnostic criteria for varicella cases are provided in a guidebook published by the Chinese Ministry of Health [ 13 ]. The case definition includes (1) fever and characteristic rash, and/or (2) a four-fold rise in antibody titre, or antigen detected in blood, or genetic material detected by polymerase chain reaction.…”

“…The post-exposure use of VarV was first suggested in the USA in 1999 (Galil et al, 1999). In China, a varicella emergency vaccination program was started in Beijing in 2006, in Guangzhou in 2012, and in Shanghai in 2013 (Li, 2013;Ma et al, 2009). However, the estimated effectiveness of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) in preventing any varicella has varied from 9% to 100% (Arbeter et al, 1986;Asano et al, 1977;Mor et al, 2004;Ma et al, 2009;World Health Organization, 2014).…”

“…Several studies have shown that the VE of VarV as PEP during school outbreaks is significant (47.0-85.3%) (Cao et al, 2018;Ma et al, 2009;Wu et al, 2019;Wu et al, 2018). In addition, the incidence of varicella fell by 30.2% after the implementation of VarV as PEP in Guangzhou, China, in 2012 (Li, 2013). Therefore, the administration of VarV as PEP is an appropriate intervention for varicella outbreak control in countries where a two-dose VarV schedule has not yet been adopted.…”

“…However, in some cities with high economic productivity in China, such as Beijing and Shanghai, school outbreaks continue to occur despite high VarV coverage (Fu et al, 2015;Lu et al, 2012;Suo et al, 2017;Zhu et al, 2017). To contain varicella outbreaks, the administration of VarV has been recommended as a post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) strategy in Chinese metropolitan cities, including Beijing (2006), Guangzhou (2012), and Shanghai (2013) (Cao et al, 2018;Li, 2013;Ma et al, 2009).…”
