Cladophialophora carrionii: a rare agent of chromoblastomycosis in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil

Abstract: SUMMARYA 73 year-old male farm laborer from a rural area presented a 15 year history of extensive tumoral lesions over his left leg. Histological studies of skin biopsy showed pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia and granulomatous chronic inflammatory process with muriform cells, confirming chromoblastomycosis (CBM). Cladophialophora carrionii was isolated in culture. Treatment with itraconazole 400 mg/day for 12 months resulted in complete remission of lesions. As far we aware, this is the first case report of C… Show more

“…F. pedrosoi and surprisingly C. carrionii , an extremely rare agent in Brazil, were isolated in our study. This fact reinforces the importance of culture methods for the isolation of CBM agents 16 . Concerning histopathology, we found no characteristics that differed from other reports in the literature 17 …”

“…Fonsecaea pedrosoi is the most common causative agent of this condition. However, in our patient we isolated Cladophialophora carrionii, a relatively rare cause of chromoblastomycosis [10]. In India this condition has been reported from Delhi, Orissa, and Guwahati in the lower extremities of middle-aged or older men, but to the best of our knowledge there are no reports of this condition in children [9;11-13].…”

“…However, currently with the availability of potent antifungal agents, chemotherapy has become the first-line of treatment with itraconazole and terbinafine being the drugs of choice, while surgery is used only for limited or small lesions [16]. Usually C. carrionii responds better to these antifungal agents than F. pedrosoi [10,17]. Accordingly, our patient showed good response to these antifungals.…”
