Abdominal ultrasound in the evaluation of fibrosis and portal hypertension in an area of schistosomiasis low endemicity

Abstract: This study was undertaken in the municipality of Bananal, São Paulo, an endemic area for schistosomiasis with a prevalence under 10% and low parasite load among infected individuals. Our objective was to identify the clinical forms of schistosomiasis among 109 patients in whom the disease had been diagnosed through direct fecal analysis and who had been medicated with oxamniquine at the time of the Plan for the Intensification of Schistosomiasis Control Actions (1998-2000). These patients were submitted to an … Show more

“…Ultrasonography provides a safe, rapid, and noninvasive method for the assessment of pathology associated with chronic hepatosplenic disease (19–22). Based on WHO guidelines, the image pattern of liver texture and objective measurements of wall thickness of a peripheral segmental portal vein and main portal vein diameter are used to grade the degree of hepatic fibrosis (23).…”

“…Granulomas are the result of host immune response to schistosome eggs. Its formation is triggered by immune cells migration to encapsulate the eggs, resulting in damage of liver tissue (fibrosis and, ultimately, cirrhosis) (Espírito Santo et al, 2008; King and Dangerfield-Cha, 2008; Burke et al, 2009). Additionally, in in vitro cultured adult worms, SmJNK does not seem to have a role in parasite movement or viability.…”
