Cystic echinococcosis in southern Brazil

Abstract: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is very common in the southern part of Rio Grande do Sul State where sheep and cattle raising is the most important economical activity. Prevalence in intermediate hosts is well known due to reports in slaughterhouses while human reports are of discussed value. This is due to underreporting of cases and few epidemiological studies make it difficult to assess the situation of echinococcosis in the population. Whereas cattle infection rate is more or less stable around 12% of the slaug… Show more

“…Indeed, the high prevalence of D. caninum in dogs in Brazil (e.g., 45.7% in north-eastern and 36.8% in south-eastern Brazil) [32,36] is a consequence of the high prevalence of flea and lice infestations reported in different regions of the country [18,28,30,32,35] and indicates a high risk of zoonotic transmission in humans, particularly children, who live in close contact with infected animals. In the same way, cystic echinococcosis caused by E. granulosus is one of the most prevalent zoonosis in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay [289], being highly prevalent in southern Brazil, where up to 50% of the dogs may be infested [72,290]. While other canids ( Pseudalopex gymnocercus , Cerdocyon thous , and Chrysocyon brachyurus ) have been found naturally infested by E. granulosus in southern Brazil [290], dogs are the main reservoir of the parasite.…”

“…It has been also proven that E. granulosus is highly endemic in the southern region of Brazil, especially Rio Grande do Sul state, where human cases are reported but the official number of cases are not clear (de la Rue 2008). Furthermore, Echinococcus vogeli is distributed in the northern part of Brazil, and some human polycystic echinococcosis (PE) cases have been reported in the Amazonas region (Soares et al 2004).…”

“…Although pigs become infected more rarely, they also seem to be well suited for developing fertile cysts (BRUZINSKAITE et al, 2009). Cystic lesions of varying shapes and sizes, corresponding to hydatid cysts in the viscera of cattle and sheep, have been reported by some authors in Rio Grande do Sul State, generally in the southern part of the state where farming is an important economic activity, which probably facilitates the access of dogs to these intermediate hosts (DE LA RUE et al, 2008;BALBINOTTI et al, 2012). However, the central/northern region of this state has not been targeted in investigations on cystic echinococcosis over recent years.…”

“…In Brazil, the disease is endemic in the southern part of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, causing infection in humans and animals and leading to high economic losses to livestock, as well as public health problems (ROMIG, 2003;GROSSO et al, 2012;DE LA RUE, 2008). Pigs are considered to be important intermediate hosts of the larval stage of the genus Echinococcus (hydatid cysts), thereby helping to maintain the parasite cycle on farms and consequently infecting dogs.…”
