Detection of Cysticercus antigens and antibodies in cerbrospinal fluid of patients with chronic meningitis

Abstract: SUMMARYChronic meningitism is a less frequent manifestation of neurocysticercosis caused by Taenia solium cysticerci. In the present study we used Co-agglutination (Co-A), a simple and rapid slide agglutination test to detect specific Cysticercus antigen in the 67 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from patients with chronic meningitis of unknown etiology. The results were compared with that of ELISA for detection of antibodies. Among these samples four (5.97%) were positive for Cysticercus antigen by Co-A test… Show more

“…solium larval stage antigen was detected by Co-A test in 57% of cysticercosis cases with hyperimmune sera raised to whole cyst antigen in the previous studies 20,21,22 . An interesting finding was that none of the HIV seropositive cases were positive for T. solium larval stage antigen.…”

“…Human (neuro) cysticercosis, an infection caused by the metacestode larval stage of the pork tapeworm Taenia solium , is a serious but neglected zoonotic disease and a major public health problem in many developing countries of Latin America, Asia and Africa [1], [2]. Humans are the definitive hosts harbouring the adult tapeworm (leading to taeniosis).…”
