Cross sectional study reveals a high percentage of asymptomatic Plasmodium vivax infection in the Amazon Rio Negro area, Brazil

Abstract: SUMMARYA parasitological, clinical, serological and molecular cross-sectional study carried out in a highly endemic malaria area of Rio Negro in the Amazon State, Brazil, revealed a high prevalence of asymptomatic Plasmodium vivax infection. A total of 109 persons from 25 families were studied in five villages. Ninety-nine inhabitants (90.8%) had at least one previous episode of malaria. Serology showed 85.7% and 46.9% of positivity when P. falciparum antigens and P. vivax MSP-1, respectively, were used. Twent… Show more

“…The gametocyte carriage of 8.6% observed in the present study is similar to the rate of 10.8% reported in Kenya [38]. Gametocyte carriers are reservoirs of infection that play a key role in continuous malaria transmission [5,10,41]; thus, the almajirai could serve as a source of infection to larger populations, challenging control measures.…”

“…However, due to the very low parasitaemia (sometimes submicroscopic) presented by these patients, it is possible that platelet counts are normal and parallel clinical symptoms (Suarez-Mutis et al 2007).…”

“…However, this method has not shown consistent results in hypo and mesoendemic areas in the American 9 or Easter Mediterranean 1 region where subpatent Plasmodium infections occur. In the Amazon region, Plasmodium-infected asymptomatic individuals are characterized as having low parasite densities which are at times even undetected by microscopy 2,11,14,15 .…”

“…A high percentage of cases occur in dispersed areas far from cities where health systems infrastructure is often deficient or absent. In recent years asymptomatic Plasmodium infections have been reported in the Amazon region 2,15 . Although a thick smear is the gold standard for malaria diagnosis, this method is not efficient for diagnosing sub patent parasites in asymptomatic Plasmodium infections 5,14 .…”
