Prevalence of IgG varicella zoster virus antibodies in the Kuikuro and Kaiabi indigenous communities in Xingu National Park, Brazil, before varicella vaccination

Abstract: SUMMARYThe purpose of the study was to estimate the prevalence of IgG antibodies against varicella zoster virus (VZV) in the two most populated indigenous ethnic groups from Xingu Indigenous National Park, in Brazil, prior to the introduction of vaccination against the disease, and to determine the positive and the negative predictive values of a history of varicella infection. In 2001, 589 inhabitants of two Kuikuro villages and three Kaiabi villages were evaluated and provided information concerning previous… Show more

“…Among population-based studies of children and adults, in the absence of or before the introduction of routine varicella vaccination, the overall seroprevalence rate ranged between 58 and 99% in LAC: 58% in Puerto Rico [43], 78–80% in Bolivia [6, 7], 81% among Xingu indigenous ethnic groups in Brazil [27], 82% among Montevideo inhabitants in Uruguay [50], 86–99% in nationally representative samples in Mexico [39, 40], and 97.2–99.3% in different parts of Argentina [25].…”

“…Indeed, a positive history of chickenpox better correlated with the presence of antibody than did a negative serologic test result for varicella [14,23,25]. In the populations of Brazil and Turkey, and the child population of Switzerland, the positive predictive value of the clinical history of varicella ranged from 95% to 100% [16,[31][32][33]. In the applicants for nurse training in Scotland, the positive predictive value of the history of varicella for seropositivity was 98%.…”

“…This study was performed between June and September 2001 at the Xingu Indigenous National Park, a 2,642,003 hectare area, located in the North of the Mato Grosso State, with a population of 3,919 inhabitants, as described elsewhere 14 . The research protocol was submitted to and approved by the Ethics Committee of the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) and by the National Ethics Committee of the Brazilian Ministry of Health.…”
