Evaluation of hemostasis disorders and anticardiolipin antibody in patients with severe leptospirosis

Abstract: A prospective study was designed to evaluate disorders of hemostasis and levels of anticardiolipin antibodies (ACL) in 30 patients with severe leptospirosis and acute renal failure (ARF) (ARF was defined as serum creatinine > or = 1.5 mg/dL). The patients had been admitted to the Walter Cantídio University Hospital, São José Infectious Diseases Hospital and General Hospital of Fortaleza, Ceará, from August 1999 to July 2001. They all were male, with a mean age of 32 ± 14 years and with clinical and laborato… Show more

“…Although the cause of leptospirosis hemorrhages is not completely understood, some studies report ongoing fibrinolysis, activation of coagulation, impaired anticoagulation, and thrombocytopenia, whereas the involvement of disseminated intravascular coagulation is controversial (Sitprija et al, 1980; Edwards et al, 1986; De Francesco Daher et al, 2002; Chierakul et al, 2008; Wagenaar et al, 2010; Vieira et al, 2016; Vieira and Nascimento, 2016). Endothelial cell infection and activation has also been implied as a mechanism in leptospirosis hemorrhages, contributing to severe disease manifestations (Martinez-Lopez et al, 2010; Goeijenbier et al, 2015).…”
