Parinaud syndrome caused by Bartonella henselae: case report

Abstract: The authors report a case of Parinaud syndrome (conjunctivitis with pre-auricular satellite adenitis) caused by Bartonella henselae, the etiologic agent of Cat Scratch Disease. The etiologic assessment of this case was performed by serum indirect immunofluorescence reaction and allowed for a better therapeutics and follow up, avoiding ineffective antibiotics and surgical interventions.

“…Another publication by the same author (Curi et al 2003) described a case of helioid unifocal choroiditis in an HIV-positive patient with CSD. Additionally, a Brazilian case of Parinaud's, involving a 9-year-old child, was published in the 1990s (Yamashita et al 1996). More recently, a case of granulomatous conjunctivitis in a 23-year-old female, without lymph node involvement, was reported (Oliveira et al 2004).…”

“…Diversos trabalhos publicados ao longo dos anos demonstraram que a SOP tem como principal agente etiológico a Bartonella hanselae (2) , causadora da Bartonellose, também conhecida por doença da arranhadura do gato, descrita inicialmente por Debre em 1950. Trata-se de uma doença infecciosa benigna que geralmente se desenvolve após o contato ou arranhadura de gato doméstico (Felis sylvestris catus).…”

“…Although there are three national rickettsial diseases reference laboratories in Brazil (FIOCRUZ, Rio de Janeiro, Adolpho Lutz, in São Paulo, and FUNEDE, in Minas Gerais), only two probable fatal cases of Bartonella endocarditis have been reported so far in our country [14]. There are also case reports of Bartonella disease such as bacillary angiomatosis in HIV-positive individuals, disseminated disease in children and cat-scratch disease in Brazil, and there are also groups who work experimentally with Bartonella [15][16][17][18][19][20][21]. Two seroprevalence studies, one in the State of Minas Gerais [22], and the other in the city of Rio de Janeiro [23], show that the Brazilian population is significantly exposed to Bartonella.…”
