Levantamento malacológico da Bacia Hidrográfica do Lago Soledade, Ouro Branco, (Minas Gerais, Brasil)

Abstract: A malacological survey was carried out at the Soledade Lake, in Ouro Branco, State of Minas Gerais, for the period 1986-1991. A total amount of 46,579 mollusks was collected, and among them seven species corresponding to five families could be found, as follows: 39,176 specimens of Biomphalaria tenagophila; 1,296 B. glabrata; 7 Drepanotrema cimex; 2,527 Physa sp; 417 Lymnaea sp; 92 Pomacea hastrum, and 3,064 specimens of Melanoides tuberculata (Melanniidae = Thiaridae) were collected from March/1990 onwards. “…These reservoirs exist in a semiarid climate, are highly eutrophic, and generally have high mean water temperatures (>28 °C), which demonstrates the impressive ecological plasticity of this species. These exotic and invasive mollusks can colonise different environments and in different trophic conditions, from oligotrophic to intensely eutrophic, lotic or lentic, and even brackish systems (Roessler et al, 1977;Thiengo et al, 1998;Sinha and Das, 1993;Silva et al,1994;Giovanelli et al, 2005;Vidigal et al, 2005).…”

“…The first specimen of the species in Brazil was observed in the city of Santos, in São Paulo, in 1967(Vaz et al, 1986. It is believed that one of the principal means of dispersion was accidental, associated with the trade and transport of fish and ornamental plants (Silva et al, 1994). Other possible modes of introduction are through stocking of fish, natural transport by material adhering to migratory birds or other animals, and transport in ballast water and/or the associated sediment.…”

“…regions that it has invaded include north america (Murray, 1964), south america (pointier et al, 1994;de Marco, 1999) and French polynesia (pointier & Marquet, 1990). in brazil, the first record of M. tuberculatus was in santos, são paulo state (vaz et al, 1986) and nowadays these invasive aquatic snails have been reported in the states of Minas Gerais (carvalho, 1986;silva et al, 1994;de Marco, 1999de Marco, ), paraíba (paz et al, 1995, rio de Janeiro (thiengo et al, 1998, 2002a, 2002bGiovanelli et al, 2003), ceará (Mello & cordeiro, 1999(Mello & cordeiro, ), paraná (pereira, 2000 and Federal district (Monteiro & dias, 1980;vieira, 1990;Garcez & Martins-silva, 1997;Medeiros, 1997). Fernandez et al (2003) still report M. tuberculatus in the states of pará, tocantins, piauí, paraíba, pernambuco, rio Grande do norte, bahia, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do sul, paraná and santa catarina.…”

“…However, the number of studies aimed to better know the malacological fauna in some regions has increased in the last decades (Paraense 1983, Souza 1986, Souza & Lima 1997, Souza et al 1998a,b, Teles 1987, 1989, 1996, Teles et al 1991, Carvalho et al 1989, 1994,b, FNS 1995, 1998, Schlemper Junior et al 1996.…”

“…In the last 40 years, great part of identification was undertaken by Dr Wladimir Lobato Paraense, Departamento de Malacologia, Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, Rio de Janeiro. In the last two decades technicians and researchers, mainly from Centro de Pesquisas René Rachou, Fiocruz, Belo Horizonte, Fundação Nacional de Saúde, Belo Horizonte and Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, have done their utmost to collect and classify the planorbid snails from this state (Souza et al 1981a, 1998b, Souza 1986, Souza & Lima 1997, Carvalho et al 1989, 1994, FNS 1995, 1998. A great deal of information was also obtained from materials sent by health officials of municipalities in the state, urban and rural state owners, researchers and technicians from several institutions.…”
