Show more

“…In fact, up to now, this strain of rodents had not been utilized either in the evaluation of immunomodulatory drugs in the course of this parasitic infection, or in oogram analysis. AKR/J mice present deficiency in the complement system, a high incidence of leukaemia (Ben-Efraim & Cinader, 1964; Wheat et al , 1987), and in the peritoneal cavity of these rodents the complete development of the trematode occurs, reaching sexual maturity and laying eggs in situ (Bicalho et al , 1993; Bicalho, 2003; Mati, 2009). Therefore, AKR/J mice characterize a permissive and interesting model for research on S. mansoni biology.…”

“…Worms were then recovered from the portal system through perfusion (Pellegrino & Siqueira, 1956). Also, in order to obtain parasitic forms from the peritoneal cavity, a methodology previously described was employed (Pereira et al , 1974; Bicalho et al , 1993; Bicalho, 2003). All worms and free granulomas were inspected, counted and fixed in 10% formalin.…”

“…Although it is not the usual site of development in natural infections, the intraperitoneal development of S. mansoni has been reported. When cercariae of S. mansoni are inoculated into the peritoneal cavity of rodents, different results are obtained in relation to the worm burden that remains intraperitoneally, as well as the total body length of the worms and their maturation (Moore & Meleney, 1955; Pereira et al , 1972; Bicalho et al , 1993; Fan & Pao, 2006). As an advantage, peritoneal infection allows a simple and rapid method for mass screening of prophylactic agents to combat schistosomiasis (Pereira et al , 1974).…”

“…However, studies on trematodes using the AKR strain remain scarce and address experimental infection using the species Brachylaima cribbi 6 , Schistosoma mansoni 4,15,27 and Zygocotyle lunata 2 . The permissiveness of AKR/J mice towards some of these helminths has been correlated to their immunological peculiarities such as deficiency in the complement pathway 3,4 , polarization of the T helper cell (Th)-1 response 12 , and a less substantial increase in the number of goblet cells associated with mucin deficiency in mucosa during experimental intestinal infection 17 .…”

“…It is possible that the immunological characteristics of the AKR/J strain are related to this finding. In fact, the fecundity of helminths seems to be directly linked to the host immune system and may be influenced by immunological variations correlated with strains of mice 4,22 , immunomodulatory drugs 20,26 and experimental co-infection 5,15 .…”
