-Purpose: The typical manifestations of neurocysticercosis are described widely in the literature. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the uncommon presentations of different forms of neurocysticercosis in MR imaging. Method: A retrospective analysis of 172 cases of neurocysticercosis in MR studies was carried out over a period of 13 years. One hundred and four males and 68 females with a mean age of 32 ± 3.7 years were studied. The studies were performed on 1.5 T GE MR units and T1 was used before and after gadolinium injection, T2 and gradient-echo (T2*) sequences. Results: The authors divided the unusual manifestations of neurocysticercosis into: intraventricular, subarachnoid, spinal, orbital, intraparenchymatous, and reactivation of previously calcified lesions. The results obtained were: intraparenchymatous 95 cases (55.23%); intraventricular 27 cases (15.69%); subarachnoid 20 cases (11.63%); spinal 6 cases (3.49%); orbital 1 case (0.58%); reactivated lesion 1 case (0.58%); association of intraventricular and intraparenchymatous 12 cases (6.98%); association of subarachnoid and intraparenchymatous 6 cases (3.49%); association of subarachnoid and intraventricular, 4 cases (2.32%). Conclusion: MR imaging is a sensitive and specific method in the analysis of different forms of unusual manifestations of neurocysticercosis, which should appear in the differential diagnosis of parenchymal, ventricular, spinal, cisternal, and orbital lesions.KEY WORDS: cysticercosis, parasites, MRI, subarachnoid space. Manifestações incomuns na ressonância magnética da neurocisticercose: análise de 172 casosRESUMO -Objetivo: as manifestações típicas da neurocisticercose já são bem conhecidas. O papel deste estudo foi demonstrar os aspectos incomuns da neurocisticercose na ressonância magnética. Método: foram analisados 172 casos de ressonância magnética de neurocisticercose na Med Imagem num período de 13 (treze) anos em aparelhos GE de 1.5T Signa (Horizon, LX e CVI). Dos casos analisados, foram diversas as formas de apresentação, incluindo intraventricular, intraespinhal, cisternal, orbital, formas atípicas parenquimatosas (simulando tumores), forma miliar e evolução não usual (reativação). Conclusão: A ressonância magnética é método sensível e específico na avaliação das numerosas formas de apresentação atípica da neurocisticercose, as quais devem constar no diagnóstico diferencial de lesões intraventriculares, cisternais, orbitárias e parenquimatosas. Qualquer órgão do corpo pode ser acometido, porém as manifestações radiológi-cas mais importantes são observadas nos pulmões, linfonodos, supra-renais, ossos, tubo digestivo e sistema nervoso. Como as manifestações pulmonares têm sido mais relatadas na literatura, optamos por discutir os principais aspectos de imagem no acometimento extrapulmonar da paracoccidioidomicose. Neste trabalho os autores realizam um estudo revisional e iconográfico de pacientes portadores da paracoccidioidomicose disseminada, apresentando os principais achados radiográficos no sistema nervoso central, glândulas adrenais, sistema osteoarticular, ganglionar e trato digestivo destes pacientes. Os métodos de diagnóstico por imagem têm permitido uma abordagem mais precisa destes pacientes e se mostrado cada vez mais sensíveis na detecção de lesões, mesmo em pacientes assintomáticos. Na maioria dos casos essas alterações são inespecíficas, podendo simular tanto lesões neoplásicas como infecciosas crônicas, sendo muitas vezes indistinguíveis da tuberculose. Apesar destas alterações serem incaracterísticas e do diagnós-tico de certeza da paracoccidioidomicose só ocorrer após a confirmação micológica ou histológica do fungo, é possivel sugerir um diagnóstico preciso quando os achados de imagem forem analisados em um contexto clínico e epidemiológico pertinente. The authors present a review and iconographic study of patients with disseminated paracoccidioidomycosis, including the main radiographic findings seen in the central nervous system, adrenal glands, osteoarticular system, lymph nodes and digestive tract. Imaging diagnostic methods have allowed a more precise approach of these patients due to their high sensitivity in detecting lesions, even in asymptomatic patients. In most cases these abnormalities are unspecific, simulating either neoplasic or chronic infectious lesions, and sometimes difficult to distinguish from tuberculosis. Although these findings are nonspecific and only the mycologic and histologic fungus demonstration can confirm the diagnosis, they may suggest a presumptive one, when these imaging findings are considered in an appropriate clinical and epidemiological setting. Quantum chemical and statistical study of megazol‐derived compounds with trypanocidal activity

ABSTRACT:In this work we performed a structure-activity relationship (SAR) study with the aim to correlate molecular properties of the megazol compound and 10 of its analogs with the biological activity against Trypanosoma cruzi (trypanocidal or antichagasic activity) presented by these molecules. The biological activity indication was obtained from in vitro tests and the molecular properties (variables or descriptors) were obtained from the optimized chemical structures by using the PM3 semiempirical method. It was calculated ϳ80 molecular properties selected among steric, constitutional, electronic, and lipophilicity properties. In order to reduce dimensionality and investigate which subset of variables (descriptors) would be more effective in classifying the compounds studied, according to their degree of trypanocidal activity, we employed statistical methodologies (pattern recognition and classification techniques) such as principal component analysis (PCA), hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), and discriminant function analysis (DFA). These methods showed that the descriptors molecular mass (MM), energy of the second lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMOϩ1), charge on the first nitrogen at substituent 2 (qNЈ), dihedral angles (D1 and D2), bond length between atom C4 and its substituent (L4), Moriguchi octanol-partition coefficient (MLogP), and length-to-breadth ratio (L/Bw) were the variables responsible for the separation between active and inactive compounds against T. cruzi. Afterwards, the PCA, KNN, and DFA models built in this work were used to perform trypanocidal activity predictions for eight new megazol analog compounds.
