How many low birthweight babies in low- and middle-income countries are preterm?

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:To assess the prevalence of preterm birth among low birthweight babies in low and middle-income countries. METHODS:Major databases (PubMed, LILACS, Google Scholar) were searched for studies on the prevalence of term and preterm LBW babies with fi eld work carried out after 1990 in low-and middle-income countries. Regression methods were used to model this proportion according to LBW prevalence levels. “…In some settings, especially in South Asia, a high proportion of low birthweight babies are term babies who are small for gestational age. 46 Distinguishing between the two is important as a baby born preterm has a higher risk of death than a baby of the same birthweight born small for gestational age at term. Babies who are both preterm and small for gestational age are at even higher risk than babies with one of the conditions.…”

“…Several studies show that premature birth occurrence is more frequent among poor populations (Barros et al 2008(Barros et al , 2011Gray et al 2008). The complex variables network involved in the low birth weight occurrence has its genesis in precarious conditions of life and work in a considerable part of Brazilian population (Minagawa et al 2006).…”
