Prevalência de chiado no peito em adultos da coorte de nascimentos de 1982, Pelotas, RS

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:To estimate the prevalence of wheezing in the chest among adults, and to explore the effect of some variables on the prevalence of this condition. METHODS:This was a prospective cohort study on individuals born in the city of Pelotas (Southern Brazil) in 1982. A total of 4,297 subjects was traced in 2004-5, representing 77.4% of the original cohort. Data were collected by means of interviews using the ISAAC (International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood Steering Committee) questionnaire. A… Show more

“…Adults with higher level of education were less likely to report wheezing. This relationship between worse socioeconomic status and greater reporting of respiratory symptoms has already been observed in other Brazilian studies and demonstrates that worse socioeconomic conditions tend to increase the population's vulnerability to these symptoms, perhaps due to greater exposure to risk factors: smoking habit, low level of education, and occupational exposure to dust 4,17 . Conversely, the greater chance of reporting wheezing among former and current smokers demonstrates the possible effects of smoking on the respiratory system, an association already well-established in the literature 1,4,15,16 .…”

“…According to the World Health Survey conducted in 2002-2003, the worldwide prevalence of this symptom in the previous 12 months among asthmatic individuals was 8.6% 12 , and Brazil was the fourth country with the highest prevalence (22.6%). Other studies conducted in Brazil among young adults showed higher prevalence (24.9% in Pelotas, state of Rio Grande do Sul, and 20.2% in Lages, state of Santa Catarina, both in the south region, and 17.9% in Cezarina, state of Goiás), but these studies also used a longer period for symptom reporting (12 months), which may have contributed to the higher prevalence of this outcome 4,17,26 .…”

“…Special attention has been paid to the production of types 1 and 2 T-helper cytokines [ 18 ]. However, in addition to biological factors, the environment may play a role, and therefore, studies in low- and middle-income settings, such as ours, are desirable, mainly because, differently from what is reported in some high-income countries, asthma in Brazil is more frequent among subjects from low socio-economic groups [ 24 , 25 ]. In Pelotas, the proportion of deliveries through C-section increased from 30.5% to 45% from 1993 to 2004 [ 8 ].…”

“…A questão referente à afirmação de "sibilos nos últimos 12 meses", que reflete asma ativa/atual, é considerada a pergunta com resposta mais reprodutível, diminuindo os vieses de memória (Solé et al, 1998). A frequência de asma ativa baseada em sintomas de chiado, mesmo sendo um bom indicativo não constitui um diagnóstico confirmado (Menezes et al, 2008). O diagnóstico médico de asma foi avaliado indiretamente através da pergunta "Já teve asma alguma vez na vida?"…”
