The scope of this article is to analyze the reliability of the diagnoses of hospital admissions for external causes financed by the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). The diagnoses for hospital admissions from the Hospital Information System (SIH-SUS) data were compared with those from the research panel created from information culled from authorizations for hospital admission (AIH) complemented with information from other sources. The reliability was analyzed in groups using crude agreement and Kappa statistics. The crude agreement was 41.1% in Londrina and 15.8% in Maringá and the highest reliability was found for groupings for self-inflicted lesions and traffic accidents in Londrina (Kappa 0.57 and 0.56) while in Maringá reliability was acceptable for self-inflicted lesions (Kappa 0.28). The low agreement with differentiated standards according to groupings of causes and according to the municipalities highlight the fact that efforts must be made to improve the quality and use of the SIH-SUS in order to understand and intervene in accidents and violence in Brazil.

The aim of this work is to describe the characteristics of hospital admissions owing to external causes in the public health system in Brazil in 2011. Data from the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System (SIH/SUS) were analyzed to obtain the frequency, coefficient of hospitalization, and hospital morbidity indicators. Of the 973,015 admissions, falls (38.4%) predominated, followed by traffic accidents (15.8%). The estimated coefficient of hospitalization owing to external causes increased with the age, and it was higher in male patients and in the midwest region of the country. The average stay was higher in hospitalizations for traffic accidents (6.1 days) and assaults (6.0 days), while the hospital mortality rate reached higher values in hospitalizations for assaults (4.7%) and self-harms (4.0%). It is evident from the knowledge of the characteristics described the usefulness of hospital morbidity data for planning care actions and prevention of the external causes.

OBJETIVO: Analisar a incidência hospitalar e a mortalidade por queimadura em menores de 15 anos, residentes em Londrina, atendidos em pronto-socorro, internados ou que foram a óbito em 2001. MÉTODOS: Trata-se de estudo transversal e descritivo, cujos dados de morbidade foram obtidos nos serviços de emergência e internação dos cinco hospitais de Londrina e os de mortalidade no Núcleo de Informação em Mortalidade do município. Para análise e tratamento dos dados, utilizou-se o programa computacional Epi-Info - versão 6.0.d. RESULTADOS: Foram estudados 182 casos de menores de 15 anos vítimas de queimadura: 82,4% por substância quente / fonte de calor; 14,3% por exposição à fumaça / fogo / chama; 3,3% por exposição a corrente elétrica. Predominou o sexo masculino (56,6%) e a idade de um ano (6,1 por 1000 crianças). A taxa de internação foi de 12,6%, ocorrendo um óbito. O período de internação foi de um a três dias em 56,5% dos casos. CONCLUSÕES: Os achados contribuem para ampliar o conhecimento epidemiológico de tais eventos, reforçando a necessidade da prevenção.
