Studies on mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) and anthropic environment: 3- Survey of adult stages at the rice irrigation system and the emergence of Anopheles albitarsis in South-Eastern, Brazil

Abstract: A study of adult Culicidae ecology was carried out from January 1992 through January 1993 at the rice irrigation system of the Ribeira Valley Experimental Station. The adaptation of Anopheles albitarsis to the anthropic environment became evident through the adult collections made at its various habitats represented by the irrigation system and the edge of the residual pond, as well as at those made within the local patchy residual woods. Other potential disease vectors were prevalent in the irrigated system t… Show more

“…Anopheles albitarsis s.l. is also dominant in anthropic agricultural environment in our region and as pointed out by FORATTINI et al 9 seems to alternate and to be related to flooding and emptying in rice paddies. In our study, we remind the forest patch is riparian and it is surrounded by breeding sites from the river banks and from pasture, so females from An.…”

“…Other studies focusing on the anopheline species were made to verify if the reservoirs were favorable breeding places to Anopheles darlingi when malaria was endemic in São Paulo 4,5,21 . Afterwards, studies to know the mosquito vector species potentially involved on the transmission and epidemiology of malaria and sylvatic arboviruses were performed mainly before the construction and flooding of dams 2,6,9,20,26,27 .…”

“…Adult collections were performed at an Experimental Station (ES) described in Forattini et al 9,10,11 (1993,1994). Outdoor and indoor adult collections were carried out at ES area in rural dwellings of the "Sitio Barra do Capinzal" (BC) (Forattini et al 9 , 1993), a site nearly one kilometer, in a straight line, away from the rice paddies.…”
