“…Monophyly of the genus Helodon is supported exclusively by cytological evidence (Rothfels 1979). Our inferred phylogeny fails to support the well‐documented (Rubtsov 1974; Currie 1988; Py‐Daniel 1990; Adler et al 2004) sister‐group relationship of Twinnia and Gymnopais , even though they share 92.3% of their gut‐character states. Austrosimulium , however, shares all character states with Gymnopais , resulting in a trichotomy ( Twinnia + Gymnopais + Austrosimulium ), despite the apparent differences in esophageal armature.…”

“…A identifi cação das espécies foi realizada sob microscópio estereoscópico e, quando necessário, em microscópio óptico, com o auxílio dos trabalhos de Py-Daniel et al (1988), Coscarón (1991), Strieder et al (1992), Strieder & Py-Daniel (1999), Hamada & Grillet (2001), Hamada & Fouque (2001) e Gil-Azevedo et al (2005).…”

“…Gill filaments are 10 in number, thicker at their base than the apical region and arranged in a three-dimensional way around the head and thorax 28,29). Three species in the Chirostilbia subgenus have pupae with similar numbers of gill filaments (D'Andretta Jr 1954, PyDaniel 1987, Py-Daniel et al 1988. Simulium distinctum Lutz, 1910 and Simulium riograndense Py-Daniel, Souza e Caldas, 1988 have 10 gill filaments, but they are thinner and arranged in a different way.…”
