Foi realizada, comparativamente, a avaliação do número de cápsulas ovíferas e ovos por caramujo e do número de ovos por desova (fecundidade) e a verificação da taxa de eclosão e de ovos férteis (fertilidade) de Biomphalaria glabrata e Biomphalaria tenagophila, no período de um ano, em condições de laboratório. Verificou-se que a média do número de ovos por desova foi significativamente maior em B. glabrata (19,9) do que em B. tenagophila (16,2), constatando-se que ambas as espécies apresentavam maior fecundidade no mês de abril, embora os fatores ambientes tenham influído pouco no parâmetro em questão. A fecundidade traduzida pelo número de desovas por caramujo-dia, mostrou-se maior em B. glabrata (0,65) do que em B. tenagophila (0,56), o mesmo acontecendo em relação ao número de ovos por caramujo-dia pois B. glabrata apresentou média de 13,4 e B. tenagophila média de 9,9. Considerando-se a fertilidade como a percentagem de eclosão dos caramujos, B. glabrata apresentou média de 95,8% e B. tenagophila a média de 90,5% de eclosão, sendo esta diferença significativa ao nível de 5%. As taxas mais elevadas de eclosão em B. glabrata foram verificadas nos meses de nomais elevadas de eclosão em B. glabrata foram verificadas nos meses de novembro a janeiro (98,0%) e em B. tenagophila nos meses outubro-novembro (95,0%) embora não tenham sido observados ritmo sazonal nem influência da temperatura na eclosão dos planorbídeos estudados.

Over time, a growing increase in human pollutants in the aquatic environment has been observed. The global presence of residues in water bodies reinforces the need to develop improved methods to detect them and evaluate their ecotoxicological effects in the aquatic environment. Thus, this study aimed to present the main assays using B. glabrata as a biological model for ecotoxicological studies. We performed a systematic literature review with data published up to June 2022 in the Science Direct, PubMed, and SciELO databases. Twenty-six studies were selected for this review after screening. B. glabrata has been studied as an ecotoxicological model for different substances through toxicity, embryotoxicity, cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and bioaccumulation assays. Studies evaluating the impact of Biomphalaria glabrata exposure to several substances have reported toxic effects, behavioral and reproductive effects, and effects on their offspring. This review presents various assays using Biomphalaria glabrata as a biological model for ecotoxicological studies. The increasing number of studies conducted with the snail provides a preview of the snail's potential as a biological model for ecotoxicological studies.

SUMMARYAn efficient method for breeding Biomphalaria tenagophila (Taim lineage/RS) was developed over a 5-year-period (2005-2010). Special facilities were provided which consisted of four cement tanks (9.4 x 0.6 x 0.22 m), with their bottom covered with a layer of sterilized red earth and calcium carbonate. Standard measures were adopted, as follows: each tank should contain an average of 3000 specimens, and would be provided with a daily ration of 35,000 mg complemented with lettuce. A green-house effect heating system was developed which constituted of movable dark canvas covers, which allowed the temperature to be controlled between 20 -24 o C. This system was essential, especially during the coldest months of the year. Approximately 27,000 specimens with a diameter of 12 mm or more were produced during a 14-month-period. The mortality rates of the newly-hatched and adult snails were 77% and 37%, respectively. The follow-up of the development system related to 310 specimens of B. tenagophila demonstrated that 70-day-old snails reached an average of 17.0 ± 0.9 mm diameter. The mortality rates and the development performance of B. tenagophila snails can be considered as highly satisfactory, when compared with other results in literature related to works carried out with different species of the genus Biomphalaria, under controlled laboratory conditions.
