Depressive symptoms in institutionalized older adults

Abstract: OBJECTIVETo estimate the prevalence of depressive symptoms among institutionalized elderly individuals and to analyze factors associated with this condition.METHODSThis was a cross-sectional study involving 462 individuals aged 60 or older, residents in long stay institutions in four Brazilian municipalities. “…Alguns autores sugerem que fatores como isolamento social, viuvez, e a falta de uma pessoa confidente parecem estar associados à maior ocorrência de depressão. A internação na ILPI pode propiciar a ocorrência dos fatores mencionados anteriormente e que não podem ser controlados metodologicamente, mas que, entretanto, podem interferir nos resultados da terapia proposta (24,25).…”

“…These data, together with those that emphasize the upward trend in the number of institutionalized older adults in countries such as Spain ( Instituto Nacional de Estadística , 2004 ; Instituto Nacional de Estadística , 2013 ), make it essential to delve into the factors that determine the mental health of this priority population group. However, while some of these variables (i.e., comorbidity with other diseases, pain, cognitive impairment, previous hospitalizations, lack of social support, etc.)…”

“…However, while some of these variables (i.e., comorbidity with other diseases, pain, cognitive impairment, previous hospitalizations, lack of social support, etc.) have been widely studied and associated with the prevalence of depression in institutionalized older adults ( McCusker et al , 2013 ; Santiago & Mattos , 2014 ), others, such as the aspects related to the management of emotions, have received scarce attention to date ( Lloyd et al , 2012 ). Therefore it is necessary to identify those variables that can promote and have a positive impact on the wellbeing of this group.…”

“…14 The study participants were evaluated for the presence of pain, location of pain and intensity, Body Mass Index (BMI), daily activities, Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), changes in gait, movement limitation, joint instability, joint stiffness, dizziness, number of falls and falls in the last 3 months. 12,15,16 Several studies have analyzed the gait performance using walkways with electronic pressure sensors. Using the devices, were possible to calculate, among other variables, the waking speed, steps size, cadence (number of steps per minute) and the percentage of dual phase support.…”
