Food waste is one of the main obstacles to transitioning to sustainable and circular food systems. Food waste-reducing platforms (FWRPs) have emerged as low-cost alternatives by donating or commercializing surpluses and non-commercial food. However, as a recent phenomenon, little is known about their actual contribution to the fight against food waste. This study aims to employ a systematic review of the literature to understand the main issues of FWRPs. Our results indicate that technology plays multiple roles in FWRPs: enabling the sharing of surpluses by connecting supply and demand, monitoring and generating data on waste, among others. However, technology is insufficient for food recovery. FWRPs’ business models must be aligned with the sustainability concept, encompassing environmental, economic and social benefits. Innovators must design and prototype solutions to address these various intended functions. This study points out many barriers to implementing these digital platforms, such as delivering multiple benefits for heterogeneous actors. Other barriers involve building trust and changing the behaviour of actors concerning their food habits. The scarcity of empirical studies has limited a better understanding of FWRPs and their actual ability to tackle food waste on a large scale. Despite the limitations found in the literature, digital platforms are an interesting solution to food waste management by promoting food waste prevention and reduction strategies at the source.

PurposeWith the launch of mobile applications to reduce food waste, this study reviews scholarly articles to answer the questions: (1) What research topics are extensively discussed in relation to food waste mobile applications (FWMA)? (2) How do these applications impact food waste and food poverty? (3) At which stage of the supply chain are digital applications employed?Design/methodology/approachThis paper conducts a systematic literature review of scholarly articles on the topic of mobile applications and food waste to answer three research questions.FindingsThe article provides a definition of mobile applications to reduce food waste. Most published studies on mobile applications are from developed countries. Over half of the applications address procurement and consumption along the supply chain. The applications are categorized by food saving method and used in studies on innovation management, platform relations and performance, the supply chain activities impacted and platform acceptance.Research limitations/implicationsThe articles and applications analyzed suggest more quantitative studies. A wider range of cases in diverse cultural settings is needed, as well as analyses of the factors influencing the development, performance and market acceptance of platforms.Originality/valueThis study is the first study to systematically review the relevant scholarly contributions related to mobile applications, an innovative practice that helps reduce food waste. It allows making an initial progress report on the research carried out.

Every year, 1.3 billion pieces of food are wasted, which impacts the circular economy's (CE) effective transition, and greater knowledge of the consumer's opinion and valorisation of food waste has positive consequences on food safety, the environment and sustainable consumption. There are different platforms and apps for improving food waste behaviour, some linked to social concerns and others trying to achieve circular economy goals. This study aims to analyse the influence drivers of users' motivation to use these food waste technologies in Portugal. It follows a qualitative approach to fully understand the user's motivation and link to their social and environmental concerns. Results revealed that most of the interviewees who used these platforms/apps were driven by economic influences and had environmental concerns. Identifying the users' drivers of influence on food waste and reflecting on the consequences for businesses and their marketing strategies on positioning and communication was possible, so promoting behaviour to facilitate the social dimension of the CE transition.
