This paper aims to discuss about the relationship between institutional context and the level of entrepreneurship in Latin American countries. Based on previous research (a) institutional environment, (b) macroeconomic environment and (c) educational environment are dimensions of institutional context that could impact the country levels of initial entrepreneurship (TEA) and established entrepreneurship (TEE). Using regression models, level of entrepreneurship (dependent variable) was represented by TEA and TEE rates for the period from 2007 to 2016. As a result, the institutional environment and macroeconomic environment showed a negative influence on TEE and the educational environment had a positive influence. Regarding the TEA, it was shown that it has a positive influence from all the independent variables. In this way, it can be affirmed that they have the potential to broaden the discussions at the intersection of entrepreneurship studies, developing countries and institutional theory, as well as opening possibilities for future research.

Resumo: A disposição e a habilidade para criar algo novo, agregado à capacidade de gerar soluções sustentáveis através de um empreendimento é um talento capaz de melhorar a eficiência de um sistema, promovendo ganhos econômicos e sociais. Objetivo: Identificar como as características pessoais, a atitude empreendedora e o ramo de negócio sustentável podem contribuir para o processo empreendedor. Materiais e Métodos: Estudo de caso, de caráter qualitativo e exploratório, aplicando-se uma entrevista em profundidade a um empreendedor. Resultados: Os resultados são categorizados em: “Dados Sociodemográficos e Empreendedorismo”, “Características pessoais de um Empreendedor”, “Atitudes envolvidas no Processo Empreendedor” e “Empreendedorismo e Sustentabilidade”. Os resultados obtidos indicam que existem fatores que favorecem o empreendedorismo, tais como a experiência anterior na área de interesse, alto nível de formação acadêmica e a procura por apoio especializado no momento de empreender. Considerações Finais: Conquanto exista uma combinação “favorável” de fatores para o sucesso de um novo empreendimento, há muito que se discutir acerca do perfil, das motivações e das atitudes pessoais de cada empreendedor para que os novos negócios na área da sustentabilidade possam gerar lucros e estabelecer-se com sucesso no mercado atual.

Entrepreneurship research in Latin America: a literature review

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to focus on the state of entrepreneurship research in the Latin American context, with special emphasis on international entrepreneurship research developed in this region. Therefore, the aim and contribution are to identify the main themes in the literature about entrepreneurship and show the evolution of entrepreneurship research in Latin America to stimulate the research and provide future research lines. Design/methodology/approach The methodology is based in a systematic literature review, using 128 articles published between 2002 and 2018, in scientific journals in the region according to SCImago Journal & Country Rank. Findings The results show the evolution through the journals, authors, topics and methodologies used by the researchers. It is emphasized that there is a very low level of research in international entrepreneurship in Latin America. This result is coherent with higher levels of entrepreneurship in Latin American countries but very few oriented to international markets. This is one of the challenges considering the importance of this field. Originality/value Entrepreneurship is a field of study that has grown throughout history. Even so, in the Latin American context, research published in high impact journals is limited. This paper is the first systematic literature review and thematic analysis of research on the field of entrepreneurship in the Latin American context. In this way, it serves as encouragement for future research, providing possibilities and challenges within the field of study.
