Evaluating the Efficiency Progress With Technology in a Spanish Hotel Chain

Abstract: This paper analyzes the changes in the total factor productivity index of a Spanish hotel chain in the period from 2007 to 2010 with the purpose of identifying efficiency patterns for the chain in a period of financial crisis. The data envelopment analysis (DEA) Malmquist productivity index was used to estimate productivity change in 38 hotels of the AC chain. Results reveal AC hotels' efficiency trends and, therefore, their competitiveness in the recession period; they also show the changes experienced in the… Show more

“…If the change in the components of the Malmquist TFP index is less than 1. it indicates a decrease in performance, and a greater than 1 indicates an increase in performance. Pure technical efficiency change (PTEC) measures the DMU's ability to transform its inputs into outputs (Gonzalez-Rodriguez, Martin and Giuliani, 2014). The change in PTEC and the fact that ESC is greater than 1 indicate the success of the enterprise in terms of managerial efficiency and production at an appropriate scale.…”

“…In recent years Malmquist (TFP) Index is accepted as a standard approach to measure productivity and observe productivity changes between different time periods (Rashidi, et al, 2014). Malmquist Index is an ideal measurement mean to observe productivity changes in time (Gonzalez-Rodriguez, et al, 2014).…”
