Abstract: Audi tory evoked brainstem responses (ABR) is a noninvasive electrical potential registration which evaluates the auditory tract from the middle ear to the auditory cortex in the first 12 milliseconds (ms). The ABR is an important otoneurological evaluation. Aim: confirm the test's usefulness, major incidence and topography according to are range gender considering the absolute latencies of the waves and interpeak intervals. Materials and Method: we retrospectively analyzed 403 tests from a private clinic in t… Show more

“…These findings concur with those of other studies of neonates, lactating infants and older children, 7,8,18 but disagree with other studies of neonates, lactating infants, children and adults where longer latencies were found in males, mostly for absolute wave III and V latencies. 10,17,21,26,27 The authors explain these findings by the fact that females have faster cochlear responses, which may underlie earlier brainstem responses. 28,29 Most subjects presented an inter-ear absolute wave V latency difference below 0.4 ms.…”

“…The brainstem auditory evoked response test allows the evaluation of the functional integrity of the auditory tract with several clinical applications, particularly as a method for auditory screening in high-risk neonates, because of its objectivity, rapidity, noninvasiveness, bed-side capabilities and applicability to any age range (20,21) . It is estimated that, in Brazil, three to four in every 1,000 children have congenital deafness.…”
